On being a Gallery Owner/Art Dealer

Question and answer with Susan Eley / Owner / Susan Eley Fine Art

Q: What is your educational background?

A: I have a BA in Art History, Brown University (1985) and an MA in Visual Arts Administration, NYU (1991)

Q: What was your first art-related job/internship?

A: I had a summer internship at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy at the end of my junior year abroad in 1984

Q: What made you want to open your own gallery?

A: I worked in PR and education at the Morgan Library & Museum for four years and enjoyed studying and writing about the collections and working with the curators.  After I left the Morgan, I realized that I wanted to work with young artists (living ones!) and champion their work.  I have always had entrepreneurial leanings, which came together with my passion for art.

On being a Gallery Owner/Art Dealer

Carol Greene / Owner / Greene Naftali Gallery

“I have a gallery for the artists.  It’s not about selling as much work as you can as quickly as you can and it’s not about pressuring them to make more work quickly to take advantage of the market”

“I do shows all the time where I’m not going to make any money”

“Some of the best artists I’m working with aren’t even making anything material”

“If you show great artists, eventually you’re going to sell it”

“If you want to make a great gallery and you want to keep your best artists, you have to be ready to cut out the ones that aren’t holding up”

Bob Monk:  ”Don’t you feel like being an art dealer is such a special and wonderful thing? Like when you wake up in the morning you feel…                         Carol Greene: “… the crippling anxiety?!?”
